“Breaking Free” es escrita para el segundo acto del musical de invierno, y es cantada por Troy y Gabriella para ganarse los papeles protagonistas. La canción demuestra que no sólo tienen pasión por la música, sino uno por el otro también. Luego de que los chicos cantan, todos los estudiantes presentes los aplauden, mostrándoles su apoyo. De esta manera Troy y Gabriella se ganan los puestos. La canción trata de hacer llegar que hay otra persona detrás del gran deportista o la genio que creen que sólo son. Al subir 82 puestos, se convirtió en el single con el salto más grande en la historia del Hot 100. “Breaking Free” fue certificado platino junto con su soundtrack.

La canción fue aún más exitosa en el Top 100 de iTunes, llegando al #1 días después de que la película haya sido lanzada.

En Australia fue lanzado como un CD single por EMI el 1 de julio de 2006 y llegó al puesto 13.
